Haunted Houses and the Spirit of Fear: What We Let In
In this blog post of Life Reassembled, we revisit the lasting spiritual impact from when I entered a haunted house, when I was standing toe-to-toe with a life-size figure and more. Opening the spiritual door for the spirit of fear beginning to penetrate in my life in an unseen spiritual influence that eventually bled out into the open. As we explore this experience, we question how society normalizes darkness, glamorizes horror, and even idolizes killers as entertainment. We’ll look at what that says about our culture — and about the spirits we unknowingly welcome in the name of “fun.” Through personal reflection and biblical truth, we’ll confront the uncomfortable reality that some of us have become our own haunted houses — carrying spiritual residue from past experiences, people, and practices. Awareness, deliverance, and reclaiming our territory of our minds, bodies, and homes for God is our responsibility.

When I was a small child at a church Halloween event, they had a haunted house. Entering into this unknown dark tent was surreal for a grade-schooler. I remember feeling alone and scared even before going in. My mother pushing me to go in, saying, "it won't be that bad." And as I walked slowly towards the other end hoping to exit as soon as possible, a strange hand grasp at my leg; sending shivers down my spine. I ran so fast to leave this horrible nightmare.
The question remains, why was this even at a church event? Let alone, someone designated to grab at children's feet and legs with the goal to scare them.
But the spirt of fear entered into me many years prior when I was faced toe-to-toe with a life size doll. The one you may recognize the most running around with a large kitchen knife with scars all over his face. I was two years old and somehow I was lead right up to this life-size doll staring into me. After watching the movies as an adult, I understand that the story of the serial killer entering into the doll to stay alive was not only apart of the script- but it's also apart of the franchise. Spirits can enter into anything breathing or not and I believe the spirit of fear (thank God not the spirit of murder) was in that doll and was waiting patiently to enter into a child. As it was at a toy store where I saw this.
That moment became an open door — one that allowed the spirit of fear to quickly infiltrate my life. I didn’t recognise it then, but years later, I began to see how this unseen influences had taken root.
How Does Darkness Became Normal?
Today, fear has become entertainment. Horror movies top charts, serial killers are glamorized through continuous sequels of glorified and sometimes justified in their killings. What once shocked our society now barely stirs concern or a second thought. Society has normalized darkness, labeling it as thrilling or just for fun. And because of this de-sensitivity to these images and sounds, the media industry continues to push the 'awe' factor, making it more and more evil to collect more and more money. But ultimately damaging us.
“Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.” — 1 Peter 5:8
We Have Become Our Own Haunted House
Many of us carry things that never belonged to us — fear from a past experience, trauma, pain from a broken relationship, or spiritual residue from the situations we’ve been in. Without realising it, we can become our own haunted houses, filled with demonic influences from what we entertain and indulge in.
We need to CLEAN HOUSE and we need to do it now. Deliverance is possible and even if you are a Christian, you can still have demons!
God’s truth exposes what the enemy tries to hide. The same Spirit that raised Christ from the dead brings light to every dark corner within us. When we confront what’s been hiding, we don’t have to fear what we find — because freedom follows from truth.
Reclaiming Our Territory
Don't just clean house, fill it with Christ.
Matthew 12:44-45: When it arrives, it finds the house unoccupied, swept clean and put in order. Then it goes and takes with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that person is worse than the first.
We have the right to reclaim the territory of our minds, bodies, and homes — to draw clear lines about what we allow in and what no longer gets permission to stay. Christ died for us, we now have the privileged responsibility to take care of ourselves and others.
Reassembling our lives begins with discernment. It means asking hard questions about what influences we’ve normalized and being willing to close every spiritual door that doesn’t align with God’s peace.
