Reassembling Our Identity
When I think about identity, I can’t help but remember the times when mine felt so shaky that I didn’t know which way was up. Have you ever felt that? Like the pieces of who we thought we were just didn’t fit anymore?
For a long time, I tried to hold my life together. I tried to be the best wife there ever was by over-submitting to my then husband... But I couldn't find any peace in that life. I was pretending (no matter ho hard I tried not to) to be someone else and was living out a fantasy life that my then husband was creating. I was constantly left with wondering: Who am I, really?
The truth is, our identity is more than any title or lifestyle we try to live by. It’s more than what others call us or even what we call ourselves. Identity is the lens through which we see everything — our decisions, our priorities, our relationships, our peace. And when that lens gets cracked by trauma, loss, or even just life changes, it can feel like we’re walking around with blurred vision.
The Foundation of Identity
One verse that keeps me grounded deeply is Matthew 6:33:
“But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”
That reminder helps me re-center. When I shift my focus back to God’s kingdom, I’m reminded that my identity isn’t something I have to hustle to create or desperately cling to. It’s already held and secured in Him.
And when we start from there, we can pause long enough to ask honest questions:
Who am I becoming?
What story am I telling myself about my life?
Is that story aligned with truth, or just with my past experiences and hurts?
Those questions are not easy. But they’re the ones that help us reassemble from the inside out.
Reassembling from the Inside Out
If we try to organize our schedules, homes, or habits without first understanding who we are, it won’t last. We’ll keep slipping back into chaos because the foundation isn’t steady. Identity work may not sound as “productive” as cleaning out a closet or setting up a new planner — but it’s the thing that makes all the difference.
I’ve had to learn that before I could reassemble the outside of my life, I have to start from within. Sometimes that looks like journaling. Sometimes it’s prayer. Sometimes it’s just admitting that I’m not okay and letting God rebuild me.
Coming Soon
I’ve created a course that goes deeper into reassembling life from the inside out — starting with identity. It’s not available quite yet, but the waitlist is open. If this is resonating with you, I’d love for you to join so you can be the first to know when it launches!
