Finding Rest: Reassembling Our Sleep
Sleep is one of those things we all know we need, yet it’s often the first thing we sacrifice when life feels full. We stay up late trying to get just one more thing done, or we toss and turn with a mind that won’t shut off. Before we know it, exhaustion becomes our normal.
But God didn’t design us to live in constant fatigue. Rest is not wasted time — it’s a rhythm He built into creation.
God’s Design for Rest
Psalm 4:8 reminds us:
“In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety.”
Sleep is a gift, a reminder that we’re not the ones holding everything together. Each night, when we let go and close our eyes, we’re practicing trust — believing that God is at work even while we rest.
What’s Keeping Us Awake?
So often, the problem isn’t just sleep itself but the thoughts and habits surrounding it. Stress, screens, and endless to-do lists all crowd our minds and keep us restless. Sometimes, we even wear our lack of sleep like a badge of honor, as if busyness proves our worth.
But when we ignore rest, we burn out. And burnout doesn’t just affect us — it seeps into our relationships, our work, and even our faith.
Reassembling Sleep from the Inside Out
Reassembling our sleep starts with honesty: noticing the choices and thought patterns that keep us up at night. It might mean setting healthier rhythms, like winding down without a screen or giving ourselves permission to end the day before everything is “done.”
Most of all, it means remembering that rest is holy. God Himself rested on the seventh day. If He chose to pause, why do we think we can’t?
